There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves
by Lucille Colandro; illustrated by Jared Lee

That wild old lady is back and this time she is swallowing fall / autumn-themed items. What can you make from leaves, a shirt, some pants, a pumpkin, a pole, some hay, and rope? That's right, a scarecrow!

Our students LOVE the There Was an Old Lady series. There's a dozen books in the series, most focused on a  different holidays or times of year and all of them based on the same familiar rhyming pattern. By the end of the school year, our students really look forward to hearing a new 'old lady book' for each new holiday or special day!  At left are the covers for all the series books, and can see them all by clicking on the link above.

After a read aloud of the book, we put the pages of this free mini-book in a center (example of front cover at left). The kids must put the pages in the same order as in the book -- thus making it a great sequencing practicing. Once done, they read the book to their centers partner, then color it in.  The cover is shown below and the downloadable is available at the link above.
